Ciung Wanara

Once upon a time live King Barma Wijaya Kusuma that rules kingdom of Galuh. He has two empress.First empress is Pohaci Naganingrum and the second is Dewi Pangrenyep. Both are pregnant.

In 9th month Dewi Pangrenyep bear a boy. King was very happy and the boy was named Hariang Banga. Hariang Banga has aged 3 months old, but the first empress Pohaci Naganingrum not yet bear her baby. Worry if Pohaci bear a son who later can take king's love from Hariang Banga, Dewi Pangrenyep wants bring misfortune to pohaci's son.

In the 13th month pohaci bear a boy. with Dewi Pangrenyep's efforts not a single lady's maid can help pohaci but Dewi Pangyenyep her self. She replace pohaci's baby with a dog so the people said that pohaci has bear a dog. She put Pohaci's baby with an egg in a golden box and get rid of it at citanduy river.


Known that his empress has bear a dog the king was very angry and feel dishonor.He told his prime minister to kill Pohaci but prime minister did not dare to kill her. He take pohaci to her village where she was borned and then report to the king that pohaci already killed.

There was an old man with his wife, Aki and Nini Balangantrang, lived in a small village without any neighbour near their house. They were married for a long time, but have not have a child. one night Nini dreamed that the full moon fall on her. she told her dream to her husband and the husband know that they will have provision. That night Aki bring his net and went to river to catch fish.

He was surprised and very happy that he catch a golden box with a boy and an egg inside it. They take care that boy with patient and love. They incubate the egg to be a chicken.

One day aki brought the kid to the forest. In the forest that kid see a bird and ask what it is? aki said that it was 'ciung' (species of bird). That kid see another strange creature and for the second time ask what it is? aki said that it was 'wanara' (species of monkey). That kid very impressed with that animal so then aki give the him name Ciung Wanara.

Ciung wanara and his chicken grow up together. That chicken grow up to be a strong and magical rooster that never lose a fight. They always win the chicken fight competition. Ciung wanara was growing up and felt him self on awkwardness. He ask his parents about him self. Aki and Nini have no other option than to tell the truth. They told everything. hey told that he is not an ordinary child, because he has golden box that impossible for people at the village to have. It must be coming from royal family and might be son of the king.

King Barma Wijaya Kusuma who like chicken fight heard about ciung wanara and his rooster. He invite Ciung wanara to compete their rooster. Ciung wanara chalenge the king with a bet that if he win, the king must take him as a son but if he lose the king could take his life. King accept the bet gladly.

Before the roosters start to fight, ciung wanara's rooster make a strange crow seems reminding the events when the empress be executed and a baby in the golden box that get throw away. the king din't realize that, but the prime minister realize that and impressed. Even he now realizes that there Ciung Wanara was the son of the king himself.

Ciung wanara won the bet. The king fulfill the promise and take ciung wanara as his son. In the ceremonial party, king split the kingdom for Ciung wanara and Hariang Banga. After the party, the prime minister told the king the truth about the empress Pohaci Naganingrum and Ciung Wanara.

After heard the story, the king was very angry. He ordered the guards to arrest Dewi Pangrenyep. That make Ciung Wanara and Hariang Banga start to fight. Hariang Banga body was thrown to the other side of the cipamali river that flood of. Since that time Galuh kingdom split into two sides with cipamali river as a border. West side ruled by Hariang Banga. Peoples on this side likes to play 'kecapi' (local musical instrument) and rhymes. East side ruled by Ciung Wanara. The people on this side like 'wayang kulit' (doll made from leather) and sing. Predilection of the art is still clearly perceived until now.
