Malin Kundang

At one time, live a fisherman family in coastal region of Sumatra. The Family consist of father, mother and a boy called Malin Kundang. Because the financial condition of the family concern, the father decide to find sustenance at another land across wide ocean.

So now just two of them remain stay in their little shack. One week, two week, one month, two months even 1 year have passed, father has not return. So the mother have to replace father position so they can still eat. Malin is smart child but little naughty. He often pursue chicken and beat him with broom. One day when Malin is pursuing chicken, he tripped on a stone and his right arm injured. The wound became scar on the hand.


Malin Kundang grow up and feel compassionate with the mother which scrabble for him. He thought to find sustenance in another country hope when he return to home, he has become rich. So Malin interest with an invitation from a merchant ship captain who once poor and now have become very rich.

Malin Kundang tell his mother about his plan. His mother initially agree less with his intention, but malin keep insist, so mother finally agreed him. After drawing up supply and stock sufficiently, Malin immediately go to dock with his mother. " My child, if you have succeeded and rich, you mustn't forget your mother and your homeland", said mother with tears.

During his time in the ship, Malin Kundang learn a lot of navigations and sailing from the crew which have experienced. In the middle of journey, suddenly the ship attacked by pirates. All merchants residing in ship hijacked by pirate. Most crew men and passenger have murdered. very lucky Malin Kundang is save, because when that attack happened, Malin immediately hide in a small space which covered by woods.

Malin Kundang lost in the middle of sea, the ship moving without any direction till the ship stranded at a coast. With his remaining energy, Malin Kundang walk to the nearest village. Malin Kundang helped by the peoples of that village and he tells about the accident that happen to his ship. lucky him, the village where he get helped actually is a fertile village.
He works as hard as he can. With his will and his smart not so long he can gain his rich. He haves many merchant ships with staff more than 100. After becoming very rich, Malin Kundang marry a girl of a nobble family.

News that Malin kundang has been success and have been married eventually heard by his mother. She very glad and happy for her son. since that time she went to the dock everyday, hoping that her son will find his way home and see her soon.

After a while, Malin and his wife taking a vacation using a big and beautiful ship that have a lot of crew. The Mother which every day await his son to return, see that very beautiful ship, step into port. He sees there are two people which is standing above shipboard. He sure that the one standing there is her child Malin Kundang along with his wife.

Malin Kundang debark and He is greeted by his mother. she closing in to malin kundang, close enoughh to see the scar on his right arm. She very sure that the man standing in front of her is malin kundang. " Malin Kundang, my child, why you go for so long without any news?", she said at the same time embrace Malin Kundang. But what is going on then? Malin Kundang immediately discharge the embrace of mother and push her till she fallen down. " stupid woman, don't you dare to confess as my mother", Malin Kundang shouting at his mother. Malin Kundang pretend didn't recognize his mother, because he shame with the mother which filthy and very old. " That woman is your mother?", Ask wife of Malin Kundang. " No, he is only a beggar which pretend confessed as my mother to getting my money", he answered his wife.

Treated like that with her own child, she very angry. she never think that her son will become a disaffected child. Due to the heighten anger, she raise her hands and said " Oh God if he is my child, I curse him become a stone". Not so long wind rumble boisterous and awful storm come breaking ship of Malin Kundang. Afterward body of Malin Kundang become stiff and finally forming a reef.
